Is Wedding Videography Worth It?

Are you wavering over the decision to hire a wedding videographer for your special day? Here’s everything you need to consider before booking.

Wedding videos offer a lasting legacy, encapsulating those fleeting, romantic moments that photographs alone might miss. They provide a comprehensive memory of your celebration, capturing the essence and details that make your wedding uniquely yours. Alternatively, you might consider skipping professional videography, opting instead to rely on friends and family to document the day.

At Gaetano Di Giacomo Media Production, we’ve captured hundreds of weddings on film, from grand countryside estates and traditional church ceremonies to modern city venues. The most common question we have heard from potential clients over the years is:

Should we invest in a wedding videographer?”

This blog intends to answer the question, once and for all.

Common Concerns About Wedding Videography

Throughout our years creating sophisticated wedding films for clients in both the UK and Italy, we have encountered numerous questions regarding our exemplary wedding videos. As well as being asked if clients should invest in a wedding videographer, we also encounter concerns which go hand-in-hand with the nature of the work.

Is Wedding Video Intrusive?

Absolutely not. As highly skilled wedding videographers, Gaetano Di Giacomo Media Production ensures our presence is discreet, never detracting from the splendor of your day. We adeptly capture the moments you might miss—the venue setup, pristine table settings, floral arrangements, and those charged moments of anticipation as the bride and groom prepare.

While our videographer might be in the room, they operate with such subtlety that you’ll hardly notice them, seamlessly moving from one moment to the next, allowing you to focus fully on your celebration.

Will you watch the video enough to justify expense?

Your wedding video will stand as a timeless testament to the love you shared with friends and family for years to come. You can upload it to a shared family photo album so that everyone can view it again and again. It’s an heirloom that can be enjoyed repeatedly, accessible for generations—even when you’re 95, sharing your love story with your great-grandchildren.

Does that justify the expense? We leave it to you to decide.

Will you regret not having a wedding video?

Gaetano Di Giacomo Media Production has a long history in the wedding industry, both as wedding photographers and filmmakers. On average, around two-thirds of our photography clients later express regret over not having a wedding video. In fact, the need was so great that we switched our main focus to wedding videography to compensate.

Pre-wedding moments and preparations are perfectly captured with wedding videography.

The Value of Wedding Videography

Wedding videographers bring a unique value to your wedding day, which goes beyond what photography can capture. An expert wedding videographer like Gaetano Di Giacomo Media Production can capture moments and unspoken emotions that might otherwise missed.

The look of love between the bride’s mother and herself. An unknown glance filled with sheer happiness across the decorative room during the meal. A wedding videographer captures two families sharing love and laughter, coming together as one unit ready to support the new marriage. The intricate details, from the shimmer of the decor to the vibrancy of the flowers, are immortalized in video form, offering a dynamic and rich narrative that still photographs can’t fully convey.

We estimate that around 75% of married couples regret not hiring a professional videographer, a sentiment often solidified when they witness the captivating films produced for other couples.

Why Couples Regret Not Having a Wedding Videographer?

In our lifetimes, we’ve witnessed the transition from wedding photography to the era of wedding videography. Why has this shift occurred? Simply put, our parents and grandparents didn’t have the option of a wedding video in the same way as we do now.The older generations lacked the modern options available now, leading to widespread regrets. Just ask your grandmother!

The internet is filled with testimonials from couples lamenting their decision to forego wedding videography, particularly for moments that held deep personal significance. One bride on the Wedding Wire forum commented that she regretted not having a professional recording of their first dance. Similarly, numerous individuals have shared stories of disappointment when relying on friends and family for videography, only to be let down by the results.

The sentiment echoes on Hitched forum, with one bride mentioning not having the videographer at her wedding was her biggest regret of all.

Remember that post-wedding anxiety is a real thing. You can fret about your regrets so much that it gets in the way of your life. Brides magazine has a helpful article on post-wedding anxiety here should you be experiencing discomfort.

How To Choose the Right Wedding Videographer?

To choose the right wedding videographer, the key consideration ought to be style. When you choose someone to make your wedding video, you need someone who knows what they are doing. The professional is skilled in capturing, editing, and directing your footage. They will create a story which tells the world about your big day. The style they do this in should always match your vision. After all, it is your celebration to commemorate.

To ensure you find a wedding videographer who mirrors your style, consider the following tips:

  • Seek a videographer who invests time to discuss and fully grasp your vision for the ideal wedding video.
  • Opt for someone with a robust portfolio, showcasing years of experience in crafting high-quality wedding films.
  • Look for a wedding videographer who is easy going. Personality clashes can ruin what should be a wonderful event.
  • Choose a videographer who demonstrates a genuine commitment to understanding and bringing your vision to life.
  • Hire a wedding videographer who is willing to travel if you wish to marry abroad.

And remember to ask to see previous examples of their work.

Maximising Your Investment

Choosing to hire a wedding videographer is an investment in preserving your memories. To ensure you maximise this investment, consider the following tips and tricks:

Opt for Package Deals

Opting for a comprehensive package that includes wedding videography, drone footage, setup shots, candid day-of footage, and post-production editing offers the best value. It simplifies the process, giving you peace of mind that all aspects of capturing your day are covered. Some videographers might offer budget-friendly options within their packages.

Select The Appropriate Video Length

A shorter video means a smaller bill from your videographer. A longer video covers more of your special occasion and truly captures the day. Align your choice with your budget and preferences.

One Videographer Might Be Enough

There is no need to hire more than one wedding videographer if you have a small to medium-sized wedding. Grand displays require grander wedding video packages. The more lavish the event, the more angles you will need to cover. Consider the scale of your event when deciding on the number of videographers.

Consider DIY Editing

If you possess video editing skills, you might consider editing the footage yourself. This could reduce costs, but be mindful that professional editing contributes significantly to the overall quality and impact of your wedding film. Consider this as a budget option only if you are confident in your editing abilities and willing to put in the hours of work.

A Wedding Videographer Captures the Magic

A wedding videographer can offer you a package that aligns with both your budget and needs. They will show up on your wedding day, take the footage they need, and create a gorgeous, elegant wedding video which is completely tailored to you. By choosing a professional over entrusting this crucial task to a relative with a camera, you safeguard yourself from potential disappointment. Otherwise, like a full 75% of all married couples, you may come to regret it.

What is Wedding Videography?

Wedding videography is the term we use to describe the entire process of creating the wedding video of a client’s big day. It involves multiple tasks, making it a significant endeavour best left to professionals. An amateur cannot achieve the level of excellence your wedding deserves.

A wedding videographer –  a specialist in creating quality wedding videos – will undertake multiple tasks, including:

  • Initial meeting to discuss your venue, dates, and expectations
  • Consultation before the event to discuss your vision and ongoing throughout
  • Travel to and from the venue
  • Bring specialist camera equipment with them to your wedding
  • They will show up early to capture the setup of your venue
  • Record your guests arriving
  • Record the parties getting ready
  • Record the event itself, the grounds, the party, the meal, and any other celebrations
  • Do follow-up work and ongoing consultations until the final edit is settled upon and produced

After the wedding, the videographer will then offer an editing service where they will spend hours turning that raw footage into the specific style of wedding video which you require.

Don’t forget that the videographer does extra work for different styles, such as interviewing guests for a documentary-style wedding or buying their own props to make the photos more interesting.

The Different Styles of Wedding Video

There are different styles of wedding videos to familiarise yourself with so that you can make an informed decision about what style you’d like.

The Cinematic Wedding Masterpeice

For those desiring swooping aerial footage, creative shots that make everything appear epic, and wedding films that resemble action movies, a fully cinematic style experience is ideal. Think Hollywood, glamour, and sensational shots.

The Wedding Trailer

Enhance your cinematic wedding video with a thirty-second teaser trailer, capturing the essence and pivotal moments in a compact form. Opt for a slightly longer two-minute version to capture the essence, the main moment, and little else. This shorter wedding trailer video can be a cost-effective option for weddings on a budget.

The Storytelling Video

At Gaetano Di Giacomo Media Production, storytelling wedding videos are our speciality. We see every wedding video as a chance to narrate a beautiful love story on film. Recount your love as the romance that it is and let us tell your story. Read more about our storytelling style here.

The Traditional Wedding Film

A traditional wedding video style will echo many of those which you have already come across, as posted by family and friends. It covers the event, the I do’s, and the guests. It suitably records everything it needs to. For those who cherish nostalgia, a vintage-style wedding video fits perfectly within this traditional framework.

The Documentary Wedding Video

True to its name, a documentary-style wedding video meticulously documents your wedding day. You can choose to document the lead up to the event or you can choose to document that one day. Either way, this takes a magic-tinged-factual approach to the wedding video craft.

Wedding Animations!

Coming right out of the left wing to strike us all with an alternative, some couples are opting to have an animation made on their wedding day instead of a video. This creative alternative, brought to life by a digital animator, adapts one of the above styles into an animated format. It’s a fun alternative for those who hate to be on camera.

The Benefits of Hiring a Wedding Videographer

Underestimating the benefits of securing a professional wedding videographer is a common oversight. Opting to cut costs by entrusting this role to a friend or relative often leads to missed moments and, in worst-case scenarios, lost footage or not hitting the record button!

When you hire a professional wedding videographer, you eliminate much of this potential negativity. Experts use multiple cameras and different angles to ensure your big moment is fully covered. They have professional equipment, specially made for the task at hand. An iPhone has a wonderful camera but it cannot be in three places at once, and neither can your buddy Joe.

Other benefits of hiring an expert wedding videographer include:

  • Your wedding day, captured in full motion, allowing you to revisit those once-in-a-lifetime moments.
  • See parts of your wedding you might have missed, like your partner’s morning preparations and the anticipation they felt.
  • A high-quality video becomes a treasured keepsake for your entire family, enjoyable for years and generations to come.
  • A high quality video is a true testament to the class and love of the day.
  • Proudly share your wedding day on social media, knowing the quality reflects the day’s beauty and emotion.
  • You have a brilliant souvenir.
  • You can relive both the emotions and your vows again and again, until death do you part.

Are you trying to decide whether it’s worth having a videographer at your wedding? Here’s everything you need to consider to make an informed decision.

How To Choose Your Wedding Videographer

Selecting the right wedding videographer is crucial to ensuring your special day is captured just the way you envision it. Begin by exploring portfolios of potential videographers. These collections showcase their finest work, offering insight into their style and the quality you can expect for your own wedding. Make a list of the things you like about some videos and the things you don’t like about others, and don’t be afraid to bring that list up during that initial consultation.

Consideration of your budget is essential, but equally important is choosing a videographer whose company you enjoy. After all, they will be a significant presence on your wedding day. Enquire about their videography styles, techniques, and the equipment they use, including the number of cameras they plan to utilise for your event. Finding a videographer who aligns with both your budget and personal style will ensure a seamless experience and a final product you’ll cherish.

What To Discuss With Your Wedding Videographer

Begin the conversation by discussing budget and rates to understand what you can expect within your financial parameters. It’s important to clarify whether editing is included in their package and any special requirements they might have on the day, such as accommodation or meal breaks for all-day events.

Confirm whether your videographer is willing to travel to your venue and delve into the style of wedding video you envision. Asking how they plan to bring your vision to life can give you insight into their creative process and ensure they’re the right fit for you. Personality is another great pick. Don’t opt for a wedding videographer who talks over your ideas or ignores your needs. Look for someone who respects your ideas and is enthusiastic about making them come to life. They are executing your vision, so communication is key.

Lastly, remember to ask about additional services they might offer and to discuss what the final product will include.

Preparing For Your Wedding Day Videography

Wondering if there’s anything special you need to do to prepare for your wedding videographer? The good news is, preparing for their arrival is as straightforward as the process of hiring them. On your wedding day, you’ll be free to immerse yourself in the celebration, provided there’s a bit of preparation beforehand.

To ensure everything goes smoothly, your videographer will need a few key pieces of information:

A copy of your wedding day itinerary: This helps them plan where they need to be and when.

Pre-wedding meetings: A meeting or two before your big day is crucial to discuss your specific desires for the film and any particular moments you want to ensure are captured, like the exchange of vows.

Details on key moments: Highlighting parts of the wedding you especially want covered ensures these moments don’t go unnoticed.

With this information in hand and a clear itinerary for the day, your wedding videographer can arrive, set up, and start capturing your day’s special moments without requiring any direct oversight from you. This allows you to focus entirely on enjoying your day.

Tenuta di Artimino Wedding, Tuscany, Italy

Bride and groom exiting ceremony at their Tenuta di Artimino wedding in Tuscany.

Experience a day in the life of a destination wedding videographer for couples marrying in the UK, Italy, and beyond. This time, we visit Hotel Tenuta di Artimino in Tuscany for the Italy destination wedding of Jonathan and Arielle.

Billed as a taste of paradise in the heart of the famous, picturesque Tuscany region of Italy, Tenuta di Artimino is just 20km outside of Florence. Set amidst gentle rolling hills and verdant valleys, the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Villa La Ferdinanda boasts origins as an ancient estate belonging to the Medici family.

Opulent, grandiose, and set within its own grounds, Tenuta di Artimino is the ideal wedding venue for couples seeking a true Italian wedding in Tuscany.

An Autumn Destination Wedding in Tuscany

I was thrilled to attend this amazing autumn wedding in Tuscany at Tenuta di Artimino, when Marino Made Events contacted me to enquire about my availability. When they asked me to create an elegant wedding video for a couple from Austin, America, I couldn’t wait to film the celebration.

I was especially happy to learn that the wedding was going to be in Tuscany. I knew it would be a different style of wedding, which added to my excitement. Normally, I go to Tuscany as a destination wedding videographer in the summer months, but Jonathan and Arielle were marrying in October. Everyone forgets just how spectacular Italy can be in the autumn, and this was a perfect opportunity to showcase this.

The stage was set, the couple was sensational, and the day started well. I drove from Umbria (one of my two bases in London and Italy) to Tuscany. It is a fabulous drive through country farmhouses and past vineyards. I arrived in a wonderful mood, excited to share Arielle and Jonathan’s big day. I intended to use my drone to get Ariel shots and managed to do so. Although the villa looked gorgeous from the sky, it was a windy day up there.

After landing my poor drone, I took the opportunity to wander around, watching the crew set up, capturing those pre-wedding moments that the bride and groom both miss while readying themselves.

Rainy Day Wedding Videography

The Tenuta de Artimino has a stunning bridal suite, suitably sized for the whole bridal party to get ready in. I took a few shots here, then filmed the couple as they rehearsed their vows before the big moment in front of their loved ones. We then captured their first look in front of the big house, after the end of an emotional morning. We filmed a few shots of the bridal party and of the couple alone, and I could tell that they were very much in love.

The venue staff did a fantastic job of setting everything up for an outdoor ceremony. However, in true European wedding style, it began to rain and became extremely windy which meant we had to relocate inside. The guests were concerned that the bride and groom had travelled all the way from America and longed to marry outside in the traditional Italian countryside. But they didn’t have to, as it turned out to be spectacular and the rain didn’t ruin the wedding!

Bridesmaids standing under umbrellas at a Tenuta di Artimino wedding ceremony.

The wedding quickly (and impressively) moved back outside. It was still drizzling, which provided some fantastic footage and turned out to be a great decision. I have never had a chance to film a wedding through the drizzle before in all my 15 years of shooting weddings.

After the ceremony, the reception proceeded smoothly. The couple had a lovely time dining, enjoying drinks, and sharing their romance with family and friends. The dance floor was tremendous fun, and they left us with the impression that people from Austin sure know how to party.

The Story of an Umbria Wedding at Nikis Resort, Italy

Alfresco dinner at Nikis Resort destination wedding in Umbria, Italy.

I always enjoy exploring different parts of Europe when the summer seasons kick in. As a documentary wedding videographer based between London and Italy, I was thrilled to receive an invitation to document Philippa and Rowena’s destination wedding in Umbria, a favoured region of mine. Although I’ve visited many wedding venues, Nikis Resort was a new discovery, and I eagerly anticipated experiencing its beauty firsthand.

I arrived in the late morning, hours early for their afternoon wedding. It is a habit of mine to arrive with plenty of time to spare, as this allows me to take scenic shots of the venue and, in this case, the stunning scenic views around Umbria.

The morning boasted a clear blue sky, idyllic wedding weather. I had spent time engaging with Philippa and Rowena before their wedding day and knew they were flying out from the UK to their chosen wedding venue. They wanted to tie the knot in Umbria and were delightful to work with.

Maintaining discretion while the couple made their final preparations, I captured a few candid moments during the setup from a respectful distance. Unfortunately, the weather turned against us as the afternoon wore on. Rain forced the florist to abandon the outdoor setup and relocate it underneath a large pergola, where the ceremony was to take place. Despite the inclement weather, the couple exchanged emotionally charged vows to a scenic background under a veil of white. It was flawless, especially given the endearing nature of their words.

The weather turned bright again after the ceremony. The skies cleared, the birds sang, and the couple took advantage of the opportunity to share some beautiful on-camera moments during the aperitivo. Later, we joined the guests for an amazing Italian feast. The table settings were impeccable, and the ingredients were fresh and fragrant. Fairy lights set the stage for the speeches afterwards, adding an enchanting allure to the whole evening.

The rest of the night unfolded seamlessly. As the meal concluded, the couple cut the cake and shared their first dance beneath the stars. They got their happy ending and, for this wedding videographer, it was a truly magical summer wedding in Italy.

Wedding at Winters Tale Country Barn, in Buckingham

Elena and Hugh’s Special Day was even more special with the backdrop of a stunning location.

Situated in the lush green fields of the North Buckinghamshire countryside, Winter’s Tale Country Barn is an iconic place for a year-round wedding.

We were delighted to be asked to capture Elena and Hugh’s special day at the Barn earlier in the year. The delightful couple completed their beautiful ceremony here, with a lavish meal surrounded by their friends and family.

The Venue

Winter’s Tale Country Barn features the rich woods and elegant low rafters featured in imitation longhouses. Situated in Steeply Claydon, Buckingham, it is a favoured place for wedding receptions in and around Buckinghamshire County.

The star attraction here are the endless gorgeous fields that are ideal for your photographs, and the long hall itself, which is exquisitely decorated in string lights and elegant round tables. The barn makes for a fairy-tale experience, especially when you see the floral arches and carefully tended, lit up trees in the evening.

This wedding venue in North Buckinghamshire is effortlessly chic. From the outside, it resembles a wooden building, giving you the cosy feeling of log cabin realness. When you step inside, your breath will be taken away by the high exposed beams and the clean, welcoming, enjoyable atmosphere

The 17th Century Farmhouse

The Winter’s Tale Country Barn Wedding Venue is situated on the grounds of a 17th century farmhouse. The venue seats up to 120 guests, with the ability to accommodate eighty guests in the evening. You can have your whole wedding here, from start to finish.

Licensed for civil ceremonies, the Barn has its own quiet gardens where you can spend your first few hours as husband and wife (or variation thereof) in the elegance and calm of marital bliss. The barn has been renovated from a hay barn that stood on the same site, one hundred years ago.

This Buckingham wedding venue features an adjacent silk marquis, allowing you to bring more guests and spend time outside. They have a cocktail bar area and space for evening entertainment or for a meal. There is a secret garden for phot shoots, which includes a water fountain and bridal swing.

The Happy Couple

As you can imagine, Elena and Hugh had a wonderful day here, each marrying the special person in their lives. It was a momentous occasion in which both families came together to unite in celebration. The day was beautiful, the night even more so. There are few things in life as wonderful as the union of two families… and theirs was idyllic.

The happy couple enjoyed a video session courtesy of Gaetano Di Giacomo Media Production out in the spacious fields. Together, we created some picturesque footage which will last them a lifetime. The good memories of that day will linger, captured as moments of time in their wedding photographs. We hope they cherish them forever.

Congratulations, Elena and Hugh. We wish you all the best and many years of happiness to come. Thank you for choosing us to be part of your special day. It truly was an honour.
